The Valley Montessori School buildings were closed from March 16, 2020 through June 9, 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Our dedicated teachers and staff implemented distance learning during that time. VMS is committed to ensuring student and staff safety as we navigate this uncharted territory. We are continuously monitoring the guidance offered by the CDC, WHO, California Department of Public Health, the Livermore School District, AMS, CAIS, Community Care Licensing, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the joint guidance from the the Alameda County Public Health Department (ACPHD) in partnership with the Alameda County Office of Education (ACOE).
VMS opened 6/15/2020 for a summer program to support our families that were considered essential workers and those that needed to return to work outside the home. The program ended on Wednesday, August 5.
The 2020-2021 school year began on August 17, 2020. Toddler and Primary families were welcomed back to VMS with a complete on campus program including strict safety protocols. (A Distance Learning option is also available for Primary students.) The balance of the community is participating in Distance Learning due to state mandate. For those families that have parents that need to return to work, we are offering Elementary and Middle School students childcare, providing them a place, supervised by VMS staff, to participate in Distance Learning.
Reopening Plan for In-person Instruction
We continue to look to the ACPHD/ACOE Guidance regarding a return to in-person instruction. Effective, October 13, 2020, Alameda County elementary schools were permitted to open for in-person instruction with strict safety protocols in place and a published reopening plan submitted to the county and posted on the school’s website. VMS will begin a thoughtful & measured approach to return to in-person instruction to ensure the integrity of the Distance Learning program remains intact during the transition. The plan was submitted to the ACPHD/ACOE on 10/15/2020 and is published below.

Preventive Measures are Key!
- Teach your children to wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Modeling this action as an adult reinforces its importance. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
- Avoid close contact with people who are ill.
- Stay home when you are sick.
- Wear a face covering.
- Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash and wash your hands.
- Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.
- Practice Social Distancing
